What’s The Right Size For A Master Bedroom Rug?

Guideline on master bedroom floor plans to choose the right size rug for your home.

The master bedroom is the one room in the house where we seek sanctuary at the end of the day. So it’s no wonder that we put lots of time and effort into creating a relaxing space. Let’s start with the basics – deluxe bedding, stylish lighting, and a soft area rug for bare feet. What size rug is best for your master bedroom? It can be hard to decide without seeing the rug in your space. Plus, you have the size of the room, the size of the bed, and locations of doors and closets to work around. Master Bedroom Area Rug Tips:

Why buy a bedroom rug? Of course, it’ll add some color and pattern to your bedroom design. But what you’re really looking for is a landing pad for your bare feet on a chilly morning. Make sure your rug extends about two feet out from either side of the bed, giving you a soft and cozy pathway to your morning shower.

The Best Area Rug Sizes For Queen Beds:

If you like bare floors, or you’re on a budget, a pair of 3′ x 5′ area rugs cover the bedside floor nicely. This is a great solution for a really small room too, since you can slide the rugs a few inches under the bed if needed:

For a more coherent look, one large rug pulls the whole room together. A queen-sized mattress is five feet wide, so you’ll need at the very least a 6′ x 9′ rug, to make sure you have two feet of rug showing on each side:

We like an 8′ x 10′ area rug best for under a queen sized bed; the 8′ x 10′ size covers the bedside areas and the floor at the foot of the bed too. You’ll have room for a bench or trunk to sit on the rug – or you can leave it bare so you’ll have a carpeted walkway all the way around:

If your bedroom has the space, show off a gorgeous 9′ x 12′ area rug with a generous carpeted area around a queen-sized bed:

The Ideal Area Rug For A King Sized Bed:

King-sized mattresses come in a few different sizes, but most are around 6.5 feet wide. (Check your mattress dimensions just to be sure). You can cover the bedside areas with a 3′ x 5′ rug on each side, or if you have a very narrow space, 2′ x 6′ runners are a space-saving solution (see the dotted lines in this diagram):

Ideally, a master bedroom should have a large rug that anchors the bed. If you choose an 8′ x 10′ rug, keep in mind that large nightstands might extend off the rug, making it look a bit skimpy – so measure carefully. You can avoid this awkward layout by using 18″ wide bedside tables, which will sit within the 8′ x 10′ rug like this:

A 9′ x 12′ area rug is probably the ideal size for a master bedroom. Bedside floors are well-covered, and there’s plenty of room for nightstands. You can place the rug in front of the nightstands if there’s room, and have more of your beautiful rug on display:
